Rivers and mountains, walls and fences, buildings or contracts—people have used and continue to use markers of all kinds to define spaces. While some demarcations have an official function and are obvious, others require you to look closely, observe thoroughly and immerse yourself fully. In the first exhibition curated by Linnea Streit for the Stadtgalerie Brixen, Stefan Alber, Hannes Egger, Flo Kasearu, Letizia Romanini, Johanna Tinzl, Stefan Flunger pursue the borders in and around Europe. Some of the works deal with their material presence, following their course by path or by road. Yet, more abstract ideas of space and division, symbols of European institutions, issues of values and currency also come into play. The artists’ approaches range from conceptual or documentary to poetic or humorous.

At the beginning of June, the elections to the European Parliament will take place in the EU member states—time to reflect on the ideals we strive for and how they can be realised along the borders in and around the European Union.
