„hoch – tief – flach“      from Karl Plattner to the present day

Unique works of art for everyone

Karl Plattner was an extraordinary artist whose comprehensive body of work has assured him a prominent place in the history of art in our country. It is this fact and especially the anniversary of his hundredth birthday that give the Südtiroler Künstlerbund to commemorate this artist.

For this reason, the Gallery Prisma – in cooperation with the Gallery Alessandro Casciaro – is showing the importance of graphic art in Plattner's work and for him personally, under the title "hoch-tief-flach" While the Gallery Casciaro presents a deeper insight with all relevant themes and print works, the Prisma exhibition focuses on selected examples of graphic works serving to depict the artist's struggle with this medium and also to present contemporary printing techniques and examples of prints. Karl Plattner was very demanding of his prints, as evinced by the different stages with different degrees of coloration. Visitors can therefore view a select cross-section of flat prints and lithographs demonstrating a great variation of motifs and colors. It was only then, i.e., when his artist's eye was also satisfied, that he sometimes wrote, "bon a tirer". For him, graphic printing was not a means to an end, but rather an independent form of artistic expression. In this exhibition, the SKB strives to provide a detailed explanation especially of technical printing methods as embodied by the work of Karl Plattner. Explanatory panels provide basic information and indicate the great range of possibilities. On the basis of the works of Plattner, in particular schoolchildren have the opportunity to obtain a better understanding of graphic printing. That's because the exhibition is supplemented by the works of such renowned artists as Paul Flora and Markus Vallazza, but also with examples by very young contemporary artists such as Cindy Leitner, Mirijam Heiler, and Petra Polli who have produced fine works of graphic art. Thus, the techniques of colored etching, etching, silk-screening, linoleum printing, transfer printing, and finally also modern digital printing are presented in detail. Art for everyone – a unique work of art at an affordable price: By means of printed reproductions, it finally became possible to distribute works of art to the broad masses, and artists were able to greatly expand their audiences. Prints are still very popular today, and represent a practical way to acquire a work of art which is affordable and yet still exclusive.

With this exhibition, the Südtiroler Künstlerbund provides schoolchildren with an opportunity to work directly on-site with artists, to make their own prints, and to discover the tremendous possibilities lurking in this medium.

The exhibition will be opened on October 11, 2019 at 19:00 a.m. at the Gallery Prisma in Bozen/Bolzano and will remain open to the public until October 31, 2019.

Gallery Prisma: Tuesday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
