MUTTERNICHTS. READING AND DISCUSSION WITH CHRISTINE VESCOLI

29.02.-29.02.2024
Christine Vescoli
Library Landesbibliothek Dr. Friedrich Teßmann, Bozen / Bolzano

8 pm.

Throughout her life, nothingness was behind her mother, all-encompassing and yet never tangible. After her mother's death, the daughter wonders whether she can now finally see what her mother had hidden behind her and kept silent about. She has only a few stories, whispered memories, a few photos, and newspaper clippings to trace a childhood full of hardship and coldness on a strange farm in a side valley in South Tyrol. So who was she? The narrator approaches her mother's life step by step, constantly questioning whether it could have been that way or whether she is using her language to create a preformed reality that does not correspond to her mother's truth. “Mutternichts” is a powerful and poetic debut. In it, Christine Vescoli takes a fresh look at something as old-fashioned as it is contemporary: the love relationship between mother and daughter.

The conversation with the author will be led by Katrin Hillgruber, freelance journalist and literary critic in Munich.

A joint event organized by the Dr. Friedrich Teßmann Provincial Library and the South Tyrolean Artists' Association.
